Last week I made an offhanded comment about “archiving the unimportant.” The phrase, which I use in my bio from time to time, kept coming back to me throughout the day until I did something I haven’t done in years: I registered a domain on a whim.

So, here you go. Today I’m launching Archiving the Unimportant to encourage folks to digitize and share the seemingly worthless media that’s laying around.

One point I make on the site is that we sometimes have trouble telling what might be important to us in the future. Just yesterday, I came across my favorite old Walkman that I used in high school and college. After looking up some repair videos, I was wondering how much it cost back when I got it. There was no straight answer online.

And then I came across a scan of a 1991 circular for Sears that had the Walkman listed for $94.99 (about $223 today). Sure, it’s not solving world peace, but that silly little circular from 1991 that someone thought to scan gave me my answer.

Not sure where this will go in the long-term, though I’ve got a few ideas. For now, each day, a new random item will be featured and I’ll be continuing my own efforts to continue archiving the (seemingly) unimportant.
