Hey, what do we think of trying out weeknotes? I’ve been thinking about doing a weekly mailing list or something along these lines anyway, but instead I’m just going to do it here. Periodically, definitely not weekly.

(I’ve been digging Chris', so please do check his out as well. Two links in one week, Chris!)

  • The Who Cares Era (Dan Sinker) - When AI finds its way into a syndicated book list and no one seems to care that much, we are indeed teetering on a troublesome ledge.
  • Good Internet Magazine - “The internet is supposed to be fun!” I’ve been getting re-obsessed with personal web, indie web, etc. stuff and this really scratches that itch. Try “My website is ugly because I made it.”
  • url.town - Web directories are making a comeback! Maybe! (Read more about it.)
  • Kokoro - Text to speech done locally in your browser. It was a little funky for me, but good enough. I used it to read back some of my own writing to see how natural it sounded. (Try the Demo App.)
  • Blinry Container Standard - “A system for storing kitchen ingredients.” Gotta love the formality of it.

Life Notes

  • Temperatures were comfortable this week, but paired with drizzly and kinda bleh weather for the first half.
  • Had to really squeeze runs in this week to hit my monthly goal (41 months straight if I do today and tomorrow’s run!) after having been sick last week.
  • I created a Spotify playlist called Massive Jazz which is a good go-to list that combines 10,000 tracks from some of the best labels, mostly from the 40s-70s (Blue Note, Impulse!, Prestige, Columbia, Atlantic, Riverside, Verve, and Savoy). It’s largely accessible jazz, but every so often you’ll get some Sun Ra or free jazz thrown in to keep you on your toes.
  • I listened to the full discography of Pachyman. Heavy dub with occasional sounds of television theme music or funk. Really great stuff.
  • I got new things scanned for the WMWC archive: three DJ handbooks, from 1993, 1996, and 2005.
  • This weekend, I was watching a documentary about college radio (streaming free on Tubi) when all of a sudden, about 45 minutes in I hear… my voice. Sure enough, they’d used a silly station ID I recorded 30 years ago and used it as a transitional sound between scenes. Pretty funny and otherworldly to unexpectedly hear myself. (Earlier in the movie they’d used another station ID I recorded with the Indigo Girls, but my voice wasn’t on that one.)
  • I’ve been working on a couple of longer posts I’ve meant to get written for the last few weeks. There’s no rush, though. I’m taking my time.
  • I did get this one about aging/co-generational living posted, though. (It was inspired by this Atlantic podcast episode. Give it a listen.)
  • Speaking of aging, our oldest graduates high school in a couple of weeks. I’ve been trying to come to terms with that and the fact she’ll be off at college in less than three months. Three months is nothing.
