After being a podcast consumer for over 20 years, I’ve determined there are four types of podcasts I subscribe to. To me. YMMV, terms and conditions apply.

  1. I listen to every episode. These get “queued next” automatically as they’re released.
  2. I want to be aware of when they release a new episode, but I don’t listen to every episode. These podcasts are in a filtered list that I can easily access, but new episodes are not queued automatically.
  3. Ones I fall asleep to. I listen to these in a separate podcast app now so that they don’t get mixed in with everything else.
  4. The rest. These fall into multiple categories:
    • Daily podcasts that I may only listen to rarely.
    • Philosophy and philosophy-adjacent podcasts. (They’re generally not time sensitive, so I’ll dip in when I feel like it.)
    • Podcasts I heard a good episode of once and so I subscribed, but then the podcast didn’t connect as deeply as I thought.
